Description of the research topic:
Atrial fibrillation is the most common clinically relevant arrhythmia in horses. Initially, it was treated only with pharmacological, then later also with electrical cardioversion with variable outcome. From the recently developed methods for the cessation of pathological impulses originating from the pulmonary veins, radiofrequency ablation has been used in horses, but new generation, liquid nitrous oxide cryoballoon ablation has not been established in this species. This would be the objective of the proposed PhD topic. In the first part of the research, the technical background of cryoballoon ablation will be developed in euthanised horses. The ablation catheter will be introduced under ultrasound guidance through the jugular vein and the cranial vena cava into the right atrium, and then into the left atrium through the interatrial septum to the orifices of the pulmonary veins. In the second part of the research, the same procedure will be repeated in horses just before euthanasia. After ablation, histopathology will be used to evaluate the degree and extent of tissue injury. Collaborators from Medtronic Hungaria Ltd. and Gottsegen György Hungarian Institute of Cardiology will participate in the investigations.
