Description of the research topic:

Genetic origin of the Hungarian conquerors has been an open question of Hungarian prehistory, but the answer is facilitated by recent technological advances on the ancient DNA field. Analysis of high quality genome sequences obtained with new generation sequencing (NGS) methods enable to unravel the origin and genetic relationship of samples with an accuracy never seen before. Previously we studied samples from the Karos-Eperjesszög cemeteries which are considered by archaeologists to represent the military elite. This raises the question as to what extent can our findings be generalized to the entire conqueror population. To answer these questions we shall complete the conqueror database with sequences from other contemporary (10th - early 12th centuries) cemeteries, which predominantly belonged to commoners. These data may reveal if the conquerors comprised another, not yet detected group of Europeans, or found a large indigenous population in the Carpathian basin, which intensely diluted this component already in the 10th century.
