Description of the research topic:
An interesting feature of human communication is that the message a hearer gets out of an utterance goes far beyond what was actually said, i.e., the meaning carried by an utterance is more than just its semantics. The nature and operation of the mind’s ability to recover this pragmatic meaning is a relatively unexplored territory. Our project uses behavioural experiments to shed light on the measurable differences between semantic and pragmatic knowledge, to identify the precise conditions under which pragmatics can override semantics and to find out how a specific pragmatic interpretation is reached.
