Description of the research topic:
The major aim of the course is to introduce and analyse the main theoretical approaches towards studying nationalism and multiculturalism as well as their practical implications. Within this framework the course starts from the potential conceptualization of identity, the nature of modern identity politics, then continues by focusing on early nationalist thought and the rise of nationalist movements in Europe, in particular. It also discusses and confronts the major approaches of nationalism studies, including the modernist-constructivist, primordialist and ethno-symbolist ideas and arguments. The course ends by taking a critical look at the various forms of banal and everyday nationalisms and the contemporary debates of multiculturalism.
