Description of the research topic:

The course aims to introduce and analyse the complex interplay among ethnicity, nationalism and ethnic violence and ethnic conflict, and to reveal the major theories as well as the various political and institutional aspects of preventing and managing ethnopolitical conflicts. By the end of the course, students are expected to have an extensive, detailed and critical knowledge and understanding of the key concepts and theoretical approaches as well as the main features, problems, and the key developments of ethnic conflicts. In particular, they will be able to demonstrate: knowledge that covers and integrates key analytical or theoretical frameworks in studies of ethnic conflicts; a critical understanding of the principle and specialised theories, concepts and principles used in studying these issues; and a critical awareness of current and developing issues in the relevant research.
