Description of the research topic:

"Microbimes are ideal systems to study ecological and evolutionary processes both experimentally and theoretically. In the suggested project our plan to reveal some important but still less studied characters of these systems by in silico simulations. The main questions are the following: How coexistence of cooperator and cheater cells is maintained in different, structured metacommunities? What is the optimal horizontal gene transfer rate in different environments? What kind of environments help to maintain stable division of labour among different strains? Can the host maintain some microbiomes by simple screening mechanisms, such as preferring early invasion of some bacteria or feeding them preferentially?
To answer these questions, we work out individual based spatial model systems and analyse them numerically.
