Description of the research topic:

Our working group at the Institute of Medical Chemistry, Molecular Biology and Pathobiochemistry at Semmelweis University has been involved in psychogenetic studies for nearly 20 years. In various clinical collaborations we administer psychological questionnaires to patients and controls, collect DNA samples, which we genotype to determine the distribution of genetic variants in brain expressed genes and perform statistical analyses of these results. We typically study gene polymorphisms of the dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmitter systems.
In collaboration with Prof. Zsolt Demetrovics (ELTE Institute of Psychology) we study genetic variation influencing the outcome of methadone replacement therapy in heroin dependent patients. These results could be used for designing personalized medicine.
We plan to extend addiction studies in the next years in new directions (alcohol, smoking, other drugs, as well as behavioral addictions, such as gambling, internet, gaming, etc.). Our aim is to shed light on the genetic and epigenetic factors influencing addictive personality.
