Description of the research topic:

Autonomous vehicles (AV) are expected to be widely spread on our roads in 20-25 years. Until full automation is reached two aspects will play an important role, 1) the evolution and the gradually changing market penetration of AVs of different automation levels, and 2) the coexistence of AVs and conventional vehicles. The road infrastructure can be gradually adapted to AVs paying attention to the above two aspects. Recently the concept of self-explaining roads (e.g. in the Netherlands and in Germany) has become standard road design practice. This research aims at investigating whether the self-explaining nature of roads and their uniform design can contribute to a better recognition by AVs.
