Description of the research topic:

The European perch is a very valuable fish species in Europe having great potential. There are only just a few farms raising perch and the greatest problem is the fingerling production and the continuous market supply of market-size fish. This is the reason to improve the hatching technology with the off-season hatching and rearing in recirculation systems. Another aim is to improve the feeding technology. One unsolved issue is the cheap feeding of the fishes either at the fingerling and grown up stages. Being carnivore fish, the conventional diet is based on animal protein sources. Unfortunately, the increasing fish- and crabmeal prices make the feeding more expensive. In the last few years new protein sources have appeared, eg. the insect protein, which could be a promising alternative.
