Description of the research topic:

The research starts with a very detailed international literature review on geosynthetic-reinforced granular materials (mainly railway ballast, railway subballast, protection layers, granular road subbase layers, etc.). This research field is based on laboratory tests (large scale, i.e. true scale, as well as reduction scale), field tests and discrete and/or finite element modelling. Our institute has a multi-level shear box that is adequate for determination of inner shear resistance of granular materials in different height horizontal surfaces. The other method is the so called triaxial tests where the deformations have to be measured during loading (static, cyclic). The PhD student has to perform a lot of laboratory tests with special geosynthetic inclusions and has to simulate these tests in discrete element modelling software after a validating process. The aim is to determine the efficiency of different geosynthetic reinforcements in different granular material as an aspect of geometry, rock material, PSD, aperture size, depth, etc.
