Description of the research topic:

The degradation of soil is a world wide fenomena. Through degradation, soil fertility and soil health is harmed, as well as the regenerative and buffer capacity that counteract environmental effects. Restoration or stopping soil degradation requires the reestablishment of the soil food web (SFW). Depending on soil conditions this includes the restoration of parts or the entire soil food web through direct or indirect biological treatments (i.e. cover-crops, microbial inoculums and the use of natural minerals).
Questions arise about the effect of different treatments: What are the effects of treatments that target certain biological processes or treatments that target complex relationships on soil biological properties and their functioning. How do different soil physical and chemical properties affect their regenerative capability at local climatic conditions and cultivation practices? How does regenerative capability change on short and longer term? What kind of tools do we have to track and correctly evaluate the effect of different regenerative methods and the process of degradation or regeneration?
We are looking into answering these questions.
