Description of the research topic:
Soil quality integrates soil physical, chemical and biological properties in a way that describes the capacity of the soil to provide such ecosystem functions as plant productivity, soil health-capacity, water purification and the carbon sequestration. A practical measure of soil quality should emphasize soil properties that are affected by agronomic practices Optimizing the amount and quality of soil organic matter is often critical for improved soil function. Alternative organic materials, as municipal sewage sludge is frequently used. Recent research in Europe has suggested that even at legally permissible levels, metals such as Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni and Pb may have negative impacts on soil microbial ecosystems or the key individual microorganisms as rhizobia and pseudomonads. We are researching sustainable farming systems that manage soil organic matter and enhance profitability, environmental quality and food production. This project integrates key physical, chemical, and biological soil measurements, as well as experience-based judgements by farmers, into a soil quality index that is sensitive to management and focus for the soil- and environmental health issues. We are also developing methods that can be used in the field to assess the impact of agricultural practices on soil, humus quantity and quality.
