Description of the research topic:

Regarding the critical role of follicular helper-T (TFH) cells in B cell development, activation and antibody production, their failure to maintain self-tolerance potentially contributes to autoimmunity. Altered distribution and function of TFH cells may lead to a change in the proportions of B cell subtypes and result in enhanced B cell activation in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and systemic sclerosis. However, there are no data available on the role of TFH cells in SSc; additionally, the mechanisms of TFH and B cell interactions and the roles of miRNAs in pSS and SLE need to be further clarified. The primary aim of the study is to determine the distribution of different TFH cells subsets in pSS, SLE and SSc, and to assess the changes in their functions and their interactions with B cells. We also investigate the potential role of miRNAs on the operation of TFH cells and on the altered distribution and activation of B cells in the investigated systemic autoimmune diseases.
