Description of the research topic:

The background of utilisation of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) are the biologically active compounds, thus, optimalisation of their level and composition is of primarily importance. The accumulation of some secondary metabolites may be accelerated due to different stress factors and appear as stress markers. Especially valid is this for the polyphenole type compounds. However, the problem is a complex one as even the same compound may be synthesized through different pathways in different species. In the last period a number of studies have been carried out to detect the possibility of enhancing the accumulation of active compounds by the help of stress induction and by exogenous elicitors which contribute to the defence reactions of the plants. At the same time it is an important goal, that basic metabolic processes and biomass production would not be destroyed.
The research will start by a comprehensive literature review and continue by choosing the potential elicitor compounds and carrying out the treatments in case of MAP species providing different type of drugs and accumulating different types of compounds (phenolics, terpenoids, alkaloids)
Results may serve as a model for basic scientific conclusions but at the same time open the way for practical developments. The investigations take place in climatic chambers, in open field plots and in phytochemical laboratory. The topic needs candidates with appropriate plant physiological and biochemical knowledge at MSc level and good English knowledge.
