Description of the research topic:

Chlamydia trachomatis and Chlamydia pneumoniae are able to establish chronic infection in the human host. Chlamydial infection of the urogenital and respiratory tract has been shown to be accompanied by infection of the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrointestinal tract infection can contribute to the persistent infection by chlamydiae. Since chlamydiae can infect different mucosae, the host cell specificity of the infection with these pathogens will be investigated. Susceptibility of cell lines with different mucosal origins to chlamydial infection will be investigated and the molecular mechanism influencing the susceptibility and expression pattern of chlamydial genes in these cells will be analysed
