Description of the research topic:

Archeological parks and ruin gardens are special types of open air museum, where landscape architecture must have a determining role both in the presentation and explanation of the past cultures and also in the supply of the visitors from practical, recreation and aesthetic point of view. The conservation necessities at the same time may restrict the possibilities of green elements.
Analyses of European archeological parks should focus on several case studies and survey aspects, like: is landscape architecture a good helping hand in developing authentic and informative presentations, aesthetic and functional values for the visitors of archaeological parks and ruin gardens; are there determining heritage and nature preservation restrictions or principles for landscape and planting design; could be landscape architecture used to strengthen the conservation and presentation of these sites; how can archeological parks be developed for contemporary touristic and recreation purposes; how can landscape architecture contribute in a better communication and in providing a strong touristic attraction for the site.
The aim of the proposed research is to define the theoretical principles for the development of archeological parks for the contemporary and the future generations. Professional literature, the evaluation of the history and design of archeological parks, several case study analyses and precedent analyses in the European, North African, and West Balkan regions are to creates the theoretic fundament for the theses.
