Description of the research topic:

Among the consequences of trauma, the impact on the mental health is one of the most significant. For example, studies of the war survivors and refugees show a definite increase in the incidence and prevalence of mental disorders. Among them, the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is of high importance.
Lifetime prevalence of PTSD is between 1.9% and 8.8%, but this rate doubles in populations affected by conflicts.
On the other hand, many people show remarkable resilience and capacity to recover following exposure to trauma.
Evidence suggests that high levels of psychological and social support can be protective. There are professional recommendation and protocols for psychological treatment of PTSD, but less is known about the possible intercultural differences.
Although accumulating research indicates that PTSD is a universal phenomenon, there might be cultural differences in the cognitive appraisals of trauma and aspects of the posttraumatic psychological adjustment.
The aim of this research is to gain clearer picture about the possible intercultural nature of psychological mechanisms relating to war trauma, the development mental disorders, and posttraumatic adjustment.
These scientific results might be very useful to refine the existing professional recommendations for the psychological treatment of PTSD, tailored to the given cultural background.
