Reduced dimensional (0D, 1D, 2D) hetero-systems studied on atomic scale by scanning probe microscopy technique

THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Institute: University of Szeged
chemistry
Doctoral School of Chemistry

Thesis supervisor: András Berkó
Location of studies (in Hungarian): MTA - SZTE Reaction Kinetics and Surface Chemistry Research Group
Abbreviation of location of studies: MTA

Description of the research topic:

Investigation of the growth and functionalization of oxide, metal and covalent ultrathin 2D films (thickness lower than 1 nm). The growth process from the nucleation to the formation of complete 2D materials will be studied by scanning tunnelling microscopy and by several electron spectroscopy methods. Solid emphasis will be given to the discovery of new plasmonic and photonic properties of these systems. For the functionalization of the 2D films fabricated in situ on solid surfaces, several methods like metal deposition (CVD, PVD) or low energy ion sputtering will be applied in order to modify their catalytic and photocatalytic properties. Efforts will be made to elaborate nano-lithographic procedures of these 2D materials.
