Description of the research topic:
The objective of the reasearch is to study the oil/hydrocarbon removal efficiencies of the natural and synthetic adsorbents and CNTs from surface waters. It is widely known that significant part of the pollution stems from the contamination of the rivers, lakes, seas and oceans by oil and petroleum product spills. There are several methods for the mitigation of the oil contaminations in waters, however, the study on the natural and synthetic adsorbents and CNTs are in the focus of the planned research.
The Candidate should study the literature regarding the structure, surface and surface-chemistry modification of the adsorbents and CNTs with the objective to enhance their properties to efficiently adsorb hydrocarbons and petroleum derivatives from water. The increase of the hydrophobicity of the CNTs is of vital importance from the point of view of the the sorption efficiency. Therefore customized technique is to be devised to increase the effectiveness of the sorbents, namely the surface modification techiques are necessary to be studied. Morphological and surface-chemistry analytical methods ( XRD, TEM, SEM, FTIR, TG, BET, etc.) and sorption methods are to be used for the the study of the surface properties and the efficiency of the adsorbant materials
During the experimental work the sorption system is to be erected and model hydrocarbons petroleum or petroleum fractions (e.g.:kerosene) are recommended to be used and studied for the removal
