Description of the research topic:

The existence of solid phase reactions between the redox active transition metal ions, anions like permanganate, persulphate, chromate, sulfite and ligands like ammonia or organic ligands within one coordination compound results in the formation of unusual and unexpected products. For example, tetraamminemetal (metal=Cu, Zn or Cd) permanganates form nanosize MMn2O4 type (M=Cu, Cd, Zn) catalysts used in numerous technologically important reactions via selective oxidation of ammonia ligand by the permanganate anion from the coordination sphere of the central transition metal ions. The importance of the special transition metal compounds formed in these new type reactions is very high.
The candidate should prepare and characterize transition metal coordination compounds, characterize them with spectroscopical and thermal methods to find possibilities to initiate quasi-intramolecular redox reactions. Numerous transition metal ion, ligand and counter-ion may be tested, and the decomposition products should also characterize and test in various catalytic reactions. Determination of crystal and molecular structures and structure-activity relationship studies also belong to the field of the candidate.
Almost all the analytical potential of our institute, including spectroscopies, thermal analysis, surface studying methods, e.g., ICP, TG-MS, TG-IR, DSC, XRD, XPS, Mössbauer, IR, Raman, NMR, GC, HPLC, SEM, TEM and other methods will be learned and used by the candidate.
