Description of the research topic:

Climate change and depletion of hydrocarbon resources of the Earth are the main causes of the nowadays increased research on catalytic dry reforming (CO2 + CH4 ⇌ 2 CO + 2 H2). This selective transformation of methane with carbon dioxide yields syngas with equimolar ratio of CO and H2, which is one of the most important feedstock of chemical industry used for the production of liquid fuels or organic intermediates. The main purpose of this research is to prepare bimetallic catalysts with special attention to restrain carbon deposition and deactivation of the catalyst. Another objective is to analyse the coking process, if happens, with modern structural characterization techniques. The task includes synthesis of monometallic and bimetallic alkali-promoted catalysts on different oxides using colloidal and standard methods as well, and the structural characterization with advanced techniques such as, TEM, XPS, FTIR and TPR/TPO. We also plan to do i) temperature-programmed or isothermal dry reforming experiments at atmospheric pressure in plug flow reactor with 70%CH4+30%CO2 mixture (for kinetical and stability measurements) and ii) at reduced pressure in a closed loop circulation system using labelled 13CO2 (for mechanistic studies).
