Description of the research topic:
A blocking factor to the wide-spread general purpose use of quantum computers will be the level of physical and mathematical knowledge required to program them. The PhD student shall investigate how we can bring the programming of quantum computers closer to the mindset of regular software developers. The questions to answer are the following. What are the problem domains where we can successfully apply quantum computers? How can we identify and turn certain elements of the solutions of different problems into reusable units, i.e. concepts? How can we construct a programming language from these abstractions? What are the useful programming language techniques to manage software development on hybrid (conventional – quantum) computers? Can we define compilation, optimization, code transformation techniques for such programming languages?
