Description of the research topic:
The first step in the metastasis formation of cancer tissues is the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). One well known phenomenon in the background of EMT is the reduction in the E-cadherin level, achieved by the concerted actions of the Snail transcription factor and the Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2). This process involves a long non-coding RNA, HOTAIR, that is capable of binding both Snail and several components of the PRC2. The main goal of the project is to give a detailed structural characterisation of the complexes of HOTAIR and its different partners (Snail, Ezh2 and Suz12) and the deeper understanding of the signal transduction pathways that regulate them.
