Description of the research topic:
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are biological nanoparticles released by cells into the extracellular space and contain biomolecules (such as DNA, RNA, proteins, phospholipids) that may be characteristic to their cell of origin. They are important mediators of intracellular communication and are involved in many physiological conditions, so they may provide a wealth of information for early diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. The aim of the research is to investigate how EVs could serve as advanced model membranes in biophysical characterization of biomolecules such as antimicrobial peptides or membrane associated proteins of membrane active drug candidate compounds. The applicant will focus on isolation of EVs from different sources and in comparison of different isolation techniques. Different bio-physical characterization methods will be used including electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, protein assays, and spectroscopy methods. In addition, vesicles interactions with small molecules and biomolecules will be investigated.
