Description of the research topic:

The aim of the study is to investigate the recent carbon dynamics in different types of karst caves. Our aim is to explore the percentage of the recent (biogenic) carbon and the limestone-originated carbon in the cave formations and media and their alternation during the year. The combined (12C-13C-14C) measurements from the different sample types (outside ambient air, plants, soil, soil gas, dripwater, cave air, recent carbonate deposits and earlier precipitated carbonates), from different points of the caves hopefully give us a more coherent and detailed picture of the movement of the carbon and the partition of its sources in the karstic cave systems. By this waya more detailed view can be gained into the basic carbon dynamics of the karstic systems and this information could support the improved paleoclimatological interpretation of the speleothem derived carbon isotope data.
