Description of the research topic:

The magnetic field of Wendelstein 7-X stellarator has been designed to minimize the neoclassical transport losses. This design strategy can also result in anomalous / turbulent transport processes playing an important role in the confinement of the hot plasma. The first experimental experiences gained on this stellarator also showed that "interchange" type instabilities appeared - inter alia - at the plasma edge, and were subjected to spectroscopic investigations in the visible wavelength range. These short-lived "filaments", elongated along the magnetic field lines, can play an important role in understanding the turbulent transport.

The PhD student would be responsible for the investigations of these instabilities primarily via ultra-fast video diagnostics. Most of the experiments would be carried out on the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, and the young scientist would perform the evaluation and interpretation of the results, requiring good numerical skills and the ability to communicate in a large research team to carry out scientific research work.
