Description of the research topic:

Goal: One of the major challenges of neuroscience is the understanding of the mesoscale network of the cerebral cortex formed by connections between neuronal populations (.e.g. columns), which are considered as structural and functional units of the cortex. As a whole, this network can be studied only by theoretical approaches. Our goal is to derive a topologically faithful mesoscale representation of the large scale (areal level) cortical network and explore the characteristics of the mesoscale network to gain deeper understanding of cortical functioning. Task: construction of the model network by using graph theoretic tools based on the large scale, directed network of the monkey cerebral cortex, which is made by using experimental data, and analysis of the derived network. Skills required: basics of graph theory, programming, statistics.
