Description of the research topic:

Muography, short for „Muon Radiography”, is an emerging field for imaging large objects using cosmic muons. Though most physics principles are understood, efficient instrumentation is lacking to realize most measurements by this approach. Gaseous detectors provide a viable option for most of the relevant muography applications both above- and underground, whereas full exploitation of the technological possibilities needs considerable steps forward from the laboratory-bound developments in HEP instrumentation. The project aims at understanding the key physics effects which limit the signal-to-noise ratio of open sky muography measurements (including volcano imaging) and optimizing the structure of future large size detectors for resolution and cost.

Required language skills: English

Particle- and general high energy physics, high energy physics instrumentation, basic programming and electronics

Number of students who can be accepted: 1
