Description of the research topic:

Invented in 2010 (US patent # 20100327233 ), Covetics is the first covalent-metallic bonded nanocarbon-metal material with significantly enhanced properties that can survive repeated melting cycles. This new type of bond is stronger than the graphene’s sp2 bond. A number of metals with extreme low carbon solubility (Cu, Al, Ag, Au, Sn, Zn, Pb and Fe) can be used for covetics whish fuses nanocarbons (up to 9 w%) under a metallurgical process including mechanical stirring (>1000 rot/min) of the melt subjected to high (>100 A) DC current. Preparation technology, characterization of physical and chemical properties, explanation of this new type of bond, and revealing of application possibilities are all open problems in this emerging new field of material science.
