Description of the research topic:
A large number of astronomical surveys provide information on various properties of celestical object. Typical astronomical catalogs already contain billions of objects whereas future observations will provide time domain data on even more objects. Multi-wavelength astronomy requires combining data from the largest catalogs, hence statistical methods of catalog cross-identification and automatic database tools are becoming increasingly important to the entire astronomical community. The future PhD student will join an international team of astronomers and computer scientists to work on the theory and implementation of algorithms and software components that will make up the Virtual Observatory.
Required language skills: Enlgish Further requirements: masters in physics or computer science, sufficient knowledge in statistics, programming and databases
