Description of the research topic:

This research project investigates the depletion and resupply of the raw material of star formation, the cold interstellar matter in Galactic and extragalactic processes. Star formation influences the appearance and chemical composition of the Universe. While we can already observe the conditions for star formation at cosmological distances, our models are usually based on Galactic experience. The student must investigate the relation of the radiation and magnetic fields to the distribution of interstellar medium in dozens of Galactic cold and warm clouds discovered by Planck measurements. These investigations should use the extensive data bases as well as new dedicated measurements. The Galactic environment should be described using the Besancon model of the Galaxy, Planck polarization maps, and GAIA data releases, simple models of stability and interaction should be tested. The initial conditions of star formation vary during the evolution of a Galaxy and also during the evolution of the Universe. There is a considerable data base to test these also outside the Local Universe, but the student will still extend that with new measurements. The processes in extragalaxies must be interpreted using our Galactic experience on the interaction of the highest mass stars of the most active star forming regions with their environment. The candidate will join on-going international surveys of the interstellar medium: (1) The Galactic TOP-SCOPE collaboration which explores a 2-3 kpc surrounding the Solar System with mm and sub-mm radio astronomical measurements. (2) An investigation of star formation and interstellar medium in distant galaxies in collaboration with French and Japanese astronomers.
