Description of the research topic:

The hierarchical three body problem has several applications in astrophysics from planet dynamics to binaries orbiting a supermassive black hole in galactic nuclei. In the proposed project we generalize the standard description to include a stochastic force, which represents a perturbation to the system's long-term secular evolution. We discuss how the perturbation affects the long-term behavior, in particular the Kozai-Lidov oscillations. The project will have far reaching implications, including the possibility of detailed predictions on binary mergers in galactic nuclei due to the combined effect of the supermassive black hole and a nuclear star cluster. The phd research will take place in collaboration with the GALNUC ERC Starting Grant Research Group at Eotvos University, which is comprised of several excellent international postdoctoral fellows, phd students, and fosters international collaborations with UCLA, Harvard, Princeton, and Heidelberg University.
