Description of the research topic:

In the current project we aim to establish a strain collection of pathogenic and commensalist E. coli from cattle, poultry and environmental samples, and to perform genetic and pathogenetic characterization of the fresh isolates. One of the main objectives is to isolate and characterize zoonotic pathogens first of all Shiga toxin producing novel E. coli (STEC) strains. We also aim to isolate and characterize lytic / virulent bacteriophages (shortly phages) from the same samples. We will determine the genome sequences of characteristic pathogenic and zoonotic strains, and those of lytic phages. An important task is to investigate the evolutionary and pathogenetic role of prophages (integrated phages) in the bacterial genomes. Exploring the bio-control potential of the isolated lytic phages is also part of the PhD project.
