Description of the research topic:

In the mountains of Hungary, carbonate rocks are found in numerous regions. Among them crystalline limestone and dolomite are prone to karstification. Due to dissolution of soluble rocks cavities and caves are formed. Due to dissolution sinkholes may develop. If the thickness of the covering rock over this cavities is not enough or the strength of the rock is reduced due to the karstic phenomena, cave or sinkhole collapses can occur. Karstic rocks are common in the Mecsek, Bakony, Bükk and the Buda Mountains. Engineering structures and settlements are found in the karstic areas, thus their stability deserves more attention. In the There were several significant karstic collapses in 20th century. These caused damages mostly in the regions of urban areas, such as Budapest.
The candidate must investigate the causes, locations and circumstances of karst collapses documented in the last century. The changes in the strength properties of the karstic rocks need to be analysed due to the formation of karstic cavities. The load bearing capacity of the rock environment of the karstic cavities of the former collapses has to be studied. It is necessary to give a proposal to monitoring the exposed areas to avoid the occurrence of further karstic collapses.
