Description of the research topic:

During the last decade novel interdisciplinary scientific area, the research of metamaterials emerged. The fundamental idea behind the metamaterial research is that the interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter is governed not only by the chemical composition, but structuring can produce novel properties, not available in bulk form. The research field of metamaterials extend the limits of subwavelength imaging, cloak scattering objects, enhance the performance of antennas and the increases the sensitivity of sensors. Nowadays the research of metamaterials advanced to a level, where commercial applications are underway.
The key question of this research is how to choose the geometry and the dimensions of metasurfaces to engineer the effective electric permittivity and magnetic permeability in order to increase the directivity and the gain of broadband or multiband meta-antennas. The candidate will investigate as well the applicability of metamaterial antennas for sensing purposes, especially for fluidic sensors, which can be assembled in lab-on-a-chip configuration.
The metamaterials will be fabricated with conventional printed circuit technology. The developed metamaterial antennas will be characterized in the anechoic chamber available at the Department of Broadband Infocommunications and Electromagnetic Theory.
