Description of the research topic:

Description of the research topic:
Nowadays the investigation of living cells with respect to their behavior on surfaces or to their intracellular processes are in the focus of scientific interest. Modern imaging technologies enable the real-time monitoring of living cells and their intracellular processes even with a molecular scale resolution. These techniques mostly rely on the specific labelling of cellular components with fluorescent molecules. Although these methods, which use labelling molecules, became essential tools in the fields of cellular research, in several instances (e.g. in pharmaceutical research, or in stem cell research) it is advisable to avoid using such labelling molecules since they can affect or perturb the investigated processes with their presence. Label-free technologies, such as the investigation and manipulation of living, single cells open new horizons in the modern research and development in this field.
Subject areas:
The aim of the project is the development of label-free investigation techniques, to monitor the processes inside singe living cells on the nano-scale with high time resolution. The research is highly multi-disciplinary, with both theoretical and experimental aspects. The tasks of the student involve the functionalization of biosensor surfaces with living cells with computer controlled micropipette and with the novel FluidFM (Nanofluidic Atomic Force Microsope) and/ or the modelling of the related phenomena. International cooperation and regular participation in international conferences is part of the project.
