Description of the research topic:

Granular flows are important in various industrial and natural processes. The stability and flow of granular materials is often unpredictable, especially if the particles have complex shapes. A large fraction of previous studies focused on the behaviour of granular assemblies composed of spherical grains. Nonspherical grains strongly interact as they are rotating in a shear flow. This interaction can lead to a complex rheological response of the system.

The aim of the planned investigations is to accurately capture the rheology of granular flows composed of complex grain shapes, and compare the results to the well studied case of spherical particles. Various geometrical configurations will be considered to study flows in hoppers, chutes and sheared systems. We wish to clarify, how grain orientations influence the general flow properties, the probability of clogging and the character of velocity fluctuations. The measurements will be performed with high speed imaging and 3-dimensional particle tracking using MRI/X-ray tomography.
