Description of the research topic:

Hydrocarbons are the most frequent pollutants all over the world. There are many microbes which can degrade few components of hydrocarbon mixtures under aerobic conditions, but the complete elimination of hydrocarbon mixtures is still a serious challenge, especially under anaerobic conditions where most of the contaminations occur. Aerobic degradation of hydrocarbons uses oxygen as acceptor, however in the absence of oxygen, either alternative electron acceptors (e.g. expensive nitrate) are used or special coupled multicomponent routes are developed such as hydrocarbon degradation coupled to methane/hydrogen-formation. Little is known about the latter processes and their natural speed is usually slow. The aim of the work is a) to understand the microbial and molecular background of the anaerobic hydrocarbon degradation, b) to isolate and characterize powerful microbes involved in these processes, c) to characterize the microbial communities at the site of contaminations, d) to optimize/intensify/accelerate the degradation and bioconversion processes and e) to develop efficient technologies for anaerobic conversion of polluting hydrocarbons into valuable products, such as usable energy carriers.
