Description of the research topic:

The specific polyurethane foam market which was valued as 46.8 billion in 2014 will be expected to reach 72.2 billion by 2020. Apart from the ever increasing demand of polyurethane products, there is a huge creation and accumulation of waste polyurethane foams which increases the environmental load. The aim of this PhD to synthesize different kinds of foams mainly carbon foams and modified carbon foams with metal oxide nanoparticles using waste/ used flexible polyurethane foams (FPUF) as a template. It mainly focuses on the waste recycling and material utilization of the scrap polyurethane foams. The potential application of carbon foams are from high temperature thermal insulation to heat transfer depending on the carbon structure, through electrochemical storage and conversion, adsorption, vibration damping/ sound absorption, catalysis, radar absorption, filtration. In the proposed study, the porosity and the pore size distribution of the carbon foam will be optimized to incorporate the photocatalytic material and use it as absorbing/ filter material in air or water treatment for the removal of organic pollutants. The well-prepared carbon/modified carbon foam with excellent properties will be analyzed using different characterization techniques
