Description of the research topic:
Despite recent efforts in modernization of water treatment facilities, the problem of access to healthy drinking water for hundreds of millions of people has still not been solved. Cellulose nanomaterials are naturally occurring with unique structural, mechanical and optical properties. While the paper and packaging, automotive, personal care, construction, and textiles industries have recognized cellulose nanomaterial’s potential, we suggest cellulose nanomaterials have great untapped potential in water treatment technologies. Thus, we would like to create a completely new nanohybrid material where nanocellulose is in combination with carbon based photoactive composite materials. Combining this photocatalyst with cellulose a new, self-supported, photoactive nanohybrid membrane can be produced with a capability to remove different contaminants (positively charged or negatively charged species - e.g. heavy metals, viruses) from water at the same time.
