Description of the research topic:

To prevent fish mould infection caused by parasitic fungi, synthetic fungicide, malachite green (MG) was used in aquaculture for decades. However, the use of MG is no longer permitted for edible fish, neither in EU nor in USA. The alternatives (disinfectants mainly, eg. formalin) are usually less effective, are not biodegradable, and some fungi may develop resistance to these chemicals. Hence, efforts have to be made to develop alternative measures to control fish mould. On the one hand, we aim at the analyses of the genetic composition of parasitic fungus species in fish hatcheries. Furthermore, we intend to develop a biological control strategy using antagonistic microorganisms and other alternative methods, to be able to control fish mould infections in fish hatcheries.
