Description of the research topic:
Plant and animal life on Earth is driven essentially by photosynthesis. Plants and algae emit O2 into the atmosphere as a by-product of photosynthesis, and CO2 is assimilated, producing sugars. Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplast, in its continuous membrane system, the thylakoids. In seed plants, chloroplasts continuously and non-synchronously divide during growth in order to fulfil the energy and metabolic demands of the entire plant. The division mechanism of chloroplast envelope membrane has been described to some detail; however, basically nothing is known about the mechanism how thylakoids divide, which is equally important for plant productivity and environmental stress adaptation.
The goal of this PhD project is to unravel the changes in the photosynthetic apparatus during chloroplast and thylakoid division and test the working hypothesis that a substantial thylakoid membrane remodelling occurs during chloroplast division. We will use the green alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, because it has only one chloroplast whose division is synchronized with the cell cycle. The project is based on a multidisciplinary approach, including photobiophysics, molecular biology, transcriptomics and metabolomics.
