Description of the research topic:
The aim of the research is the investigation of the effects of myths, the most ancient and original cultural treasures of humanity, on literature. Accordingly, PhD students working on this subject will deal with the 19-20th century European (primarily German and Russian) variations, literary forms, paraphrases, ironical-parodistical adaptations of antic (Greek or Roman) and Christian mythological systems, with the most important mythologems that became crucial in European culture, and with those other mythical stories (Faust, Don Juan, Petersburg) that spread in European culture. The methodological framework for this field of research may be looked for in those theories that concentrate on the questions of the structure of myths, of mythopoetical concepts and of the characteristics of archaic thinking. With the help of the mythocritical analyses of concrete literary works, PhD students will demonstrate the survival and the transformation of myths through different historical periods, social structures and artistic trends, from the adaptation of mythical patterns, through the demand for the creation of new, personal myths, to the profanization of sacral stories.
