Description of the research topic:
Serotonin is a major neuromodulator involved in various physiological and pathological functions. We have previously shown that selective activation of serotonergic neurons leads to prominent and fast suppression of cortical activity. In this project the role of various identified dorsal raphé nurons (serotonergic and GABAergic) will be tested by using optical imaging of genetically encoded calcium indicators in awake behaving mice. For testing causality the activity of serotonergic and GABAergic neurons will be selectively and bidirectionally modulated and their effects on brain states quantified. These results could shed new light on the mechanisms of serotonergic neuromodulation.
