Investigation of the mechanism of function of G protein-coupled transmembrane receptors in atomic details

THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Institute: University of Szeged
biology
Doctoral School of Biology

Thesis supervisor: Attila Borics
Location of studies (in Hungarian): Institutes of Biochemistry, BRC-HAS
Abbreviation of location of studies: SZBK

Description of the research topic:

The mü-opioid receptor is an important target of the development of novel analgesics, thus it is one of the most extensively investigated G protein-coupled receptor systems. We intend to identify the role of ligand-receptor interactions with respect to the electrostatic equilibrium in order to reveal general aspects of the function of this receptor family. Our investigations will be based on experimentally derived structures of this receptor. In parallel, our studies are to follow an indirect approach, utilizing specific peptide ligands and mutant receptors.
