Description of the research topic:

The main route of tryptophan metabolism is the kynurenine pathway. The involvement of kynurenine metabolits has been suggested in the functioning of the immune system, in oxidative stress and in glutamatergic neurotransmission. Based on these observations the role of kynurenine system was proposed in several neurological disorders such as migraine, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease. Our aim is to better understand the role of the various kynurenine metabolits in animal models of the above mentioned disorders. Furthermore, with the aid of the biobank of the Department of Neurology, we would like to characterize the alterations of the kynurenine system in diseased populations, and develop new therapeutic options based on the most studied kynurenine metabolite kynurenic acid.
