Description of the research topic:

Seaweed extracts have been successfully used for plant treatments for decades. The beneficial effects on plants are principally explained by plant hormone production of seaweed. Results of chemical analysis showed that microalgae can produce most of these hormones, which are biologically active in higher plants. Therefore, we suppose that similar to the seaweed extracts, microalgae can also be used for plant treatments and influence the growth, development and yield of treated plants. The advantage of microalgae compared to seaweed extracts is the availability of many strains and the potential plant protecting effect of some strains against plant pathogens. The principal purpose of the PhD work plan is to find and use hormone producing and therefore plant biostimulating microalgae, as well as antimicrobial microalgae effective against plant pathogens.
