Description of the research topic:

This line of research examines the mechanism of disturbed emotional memory processing in subjects with frequent nightmares. According to the most influential models frequent nightmares reflect impaired emotional memory (re)processing during sleep. As a result, affective reactions in response to the originally arousing stimuli are not efficiently regulated and attenuated. Our earlier findings unraveled some of the neurophysiological features of this sleep complaint, however, it is not clear whether altered sleep physiology is associated to impaired emotional regulation during sleep. Although almost 5 percent of the population complains of frequent nightmares, the lack of the appropriate scientific understanding of and up-to-date treatment protocols for this specific sleep disorder are unfortunate shortcomings of our clinical healthcare system. The proposed research could shed more light on the mechanism of nightmare formation, propagate the professional knowledge of nightmare disorder, and facilitate the development of effective, evidence-based treatment procedures.
