Description of the research topic:
Categorization is a generalization process where we create abstract representations based on specific information. We meet the individually different exemplars of a category, which will be a basis of the general representation. Some studies found cultural differences between Eastern-Asian and American population in a way they learn complex visual categories. The bases of difference would be the so called holistic vs. analytic thinking. Our goal is to test the validity of this assumption in implicit and explicit category learning tasks.
Semantic memory in case of visual events
According to the segmentation theory we segment visual events by well-defined segments. This chunking mechanism influences our memory for both the event sequence and event parts. However, the exact mechanism and the role of event schemas is not well defined. We test in our experiments the role of visual information and existing knowledge in this segmentation process, and in later memory form the event itself.
