Description of the research topic:

Smartphone use habits among young people is a major concern today, but so is in a number of adults. People may use smartphones for arousal stimulation, or escape from psychologically distressing event(s). The time spent with these applications is only one of the many indicators that may point toward addictive behaviour. The objective of this research is to analyse the link between the smartphone use, signs and symptoms of depression, levels of sensation seeking, addictive tendencies, and withdrawal symptoms. It will answer the question whether the type and frequency, and the varied objectives of smartphone use are associated with the levels of sensation seeking, depressive-symptoms and/or deprivation sensations in various segments of the population (i.e., students, athletes, males, females, and other demographic classifications). A further embedded methodological objective is to determine the psychometric properties of two brief measurement tools aimed at screening smartphone addiction and dependence.
